FireStik KW4-B Four foot original FireStik CB antenna (Black) Review

FireStik KW4-B Four foot original FireStik CB antennaI've had a 4' FireStik KW4-W (the same antenna, only in white) on one of my cars for the past 5+ years and have been very pleased with it.It's a durable antenna that's made in the USA.The antenna is top loaded (coil is at the top) and it has a fiberglass whip.I'm using it with an old, barefoot, Cobra 20 PLUS radio. If you are new to CB radios, don't forget that you'll also need a mount, coax cable, and an SWR meter for tuning the antenna.More information on tuning the antenna is available on the FireStik website (at the bottom of this product's page or under "Tech Help").I'd recommend reading FireStik's "Tech Help" section and taking their advice when shopping for an antenna:"At least two-thirds of the antenna should be above a vehicles roof line for optimum performance."Also, make sure that you purchase a mount suitable for the length of your antenna. For example, if you mount a large fiberglass antenna through the thin sheet metal of a trunk deck, you're asking to damage the trunk deck.(Voice of experience)Similarly, if you use a magnetic mount to hold your antenna, make sure it's strong enough to support it.This antenna adjusts by removing the rubber cap and trimming the antenna down with a pair of diagonal pliers.Be warned that, if you over-trim, you'll be looking at adding a spring or quick disconnect between the antenna and the mount in order to lengthen the antenna again. If you want an antenna that is screw adjusted, take a look at the Firestik II FS series with the tunable tip.Over-all, I believe this is a great antenna.(I've also used the KW2-B & KW5-B in the past on other vehicles with excellent results.)

FIRESTIK Screw-On Extended Stake-Hole CB Antenna Mount - Stainless Steel SS-194A Review

FIRESTIK Screw-On Extended Stake-Hole CB Antenna Mount - Stainless Steel SS-194ABottom plate threads strip out too easily. I suggest brazing larger nuts to the bottom plate and replacing the screws. This may help by-pass the stripping of the small thread surface. Otherwise design and concept is good, just needs a little extra work on your part to make antenna tuning and the ability to remove it easier.

FireStik KW2-B Two foot original FireStik CB antenna (Black) Review

FireStik KW2-B Two foot original FireStik CB antennaI had a FireStik KW2-B on one of my previous cars for about 3 years and was pleased with it; however, if your mount can support a KW4 (or longer if feasible), the result will be longer range. My KW2 was mounted on the trunk deck using a gumdrop mount.I also have a KW4-W on one of my current vehicles and this review is relatively the same as my review of that antenna...It's a durable antenna that's made in the USA.The antenna is top loaded (coil is at the top) and has a fiberglass whip.If you are new to CB radio, don't forget that you'll also need a mount, coax cable, and an SWR meter for tuning the antenna.More information on tuning the antenna is available on the FireStik website (at the bottom of this product's page or under "Tech Help").I'd recommend reading FireStik's "Tech Help" section and taking their advice when shopping for an antenna:"At least two-thirds of the antenna should be above a vehicles roof line for optimum performance."This antenna adjusts by removing the rubber cap and trimming the antenna down with a pair of diagonal pliers.Be warned that, if you over-trim, you'll be looking at adding a spring or quick disconnect between the antenna and the mount in order to lengthen the antenna again. If you want an antenna that is screw adjusted, take a look at the Firestik II FS series with the tunable tip.Over-all, I believe this is a great antenna.

"Little Wil" Wilson CB Magnet Mount Antenna Review

'Little Wil' Wilson CB Magnet Mount AntennaPros:
- Very strong magnet attaches firmly to the vehicle
- Narrow whip poses little wind resistance (see importance in the text below)

Cons:
- Nothing compares to the 102" whip (any junk CB station will sound like the most expensive electronics work of art with a 102" antenna, but a whip of this length is not feasible on a regular passenger car).

This antenna is reasonably long for a four-wheeler (passenger car), and still not too long for low ceiling garages and similar spaces.

The truck drivers have been my best friends from the moment I realized how helpful they can be on the CB radio waves and nowadays mainly for security reasons I refuse to drive on a highway without a CB station. I have a number of them and a number of magnet mount antennas. One of them was almost as long/high as this one, but was wider and had a weaker magnet, so one very windy day while I was driving quite fast on the highway the wind blew it off my roof (and kept me wondering for 10 seconds how on earth it can hail on a sunny day, till I stopped and saw that the antenna was hanging by the wire and flipping left and right across the roof of my car). After that experience I used a much shorter, about 10" antenna which can never be blown away, but its reception and transmission abilities are pitiful.Little Wil antenna has the best value for me because of its combination of length, magnet strength and narrow profile for low wind resistance, and its thin and very flexible whip can get through even lowest garages.

Product Description:
Why the Wilson "Little Wil" Performs Better The "Little Wil" uses Wilson's exclusive low loss coil design and is patterned after the proven performance of the Wilson 1000 and 500. The "Little Wil" out performs all similar types of small base loaded antennas. It was designed specifically for users who want a high performance antenna with a short whip, at a low price. The Wilson tradition of designing an antenna that offers maximum efficiency for the cost is continued with the "Little Wil". The Large 10 oz. Magnet used in the "Little Wil" is the first indication of the attention to detail, engineering, quality and design that makes the antenna perform so well. The strength and holding power of the larger magnet will prove itself the first time extra speed is needed to pass the auto ahead, or on those rough and bumpy roads. The "Little Wil" hangs on long after other small antennas have fallen off and become lost and wasted money. Wilson uses 14 gauge wire to provide the maximum power handling for a small antenna. When combined with Wilson's exclusive coil winding method that allows air to flow completely around the wire, its maximum power handling is approximately 300 watts. With it's total height of only 38", when mounted on the trunk lid of most automobiles, you can safely drive into your garage without damaging the antenna or the car from the overhead door. When driving into those multi-level parking garages, at the office or shopping center, you no longer must remove the antenna. If your looking for a low cost, high quality antenna with a low profile design, the "Little Wil" is your solution.

Cobra HHROADTRIP Compact Handheld CB Radio Review

Cobra HHROADTRIP Compact Handheld CB RadioI purchased two of these units for our emergency "go" kits and regularly carry one in the truck.

I like the size and features where you have both CB and weather channels, the hot swap between services is handy as is the CB channel 9/19 hot key.The noise filter does work and gives better reception under some conditions.

Some limits I've found: The antenna designed for use with the unit in CB hand held mode limits communications to under a quarter mile line of sight in my case and the magnetic vehicle antenna will go about half a mile.I'm looking for a better mast antenna for the vehicle.

The weather channel reception is comparable with my scanner.

One thing that I didn't realize when I purchased the radios, and this would have made a difference to me, the A/C charging adapter is NOT part of the package and must be bought separately so if you want to stay off of the battery charger merry-go-round I recommend buying the charger when you buy the radio.Be aware also that the power cord provided for use in a vehicle does NOT charge the radios batterys.

What I really don't like and almost caused me to return the radios: These units use 9 - "AA" batteries, I purchased 18 rechargable batteries - about 5 bucks each, I hadn't purchased the chargers with the radios and ended up buying the biggest stand-alone battery charger I could find locally, all of the chargers I found work in paired sets and mine handles 8 at a time, so 9 is a real pain.

Tom

Product Description:
Cobra's aptly named HH Road Trip 40-channel handheld CB radio is ready to travel anywhere you do, bringing access to 10 NOAA weather channels and a four-mile range from its 4 watts of power. The onboard SoundTracker system reduces audible noise and interference by up to 90 percent over non-SoundTracker devices. Whether you're using it for emergency backup or convenient conversation between vehicles or camps, the HH Road Trip brings you quality CB communication.
High/low power switch reduces power consumption, extending battery life during spells when high power is not required. The unit operates on nine AA batteries (alkaline or Ni-Cd; batteries not included), or runs off your vehicle battery through the supplied DC cord with cigarette-lighter plug. An included magnet-mount antenna ensures maximum range.
The Citizens Band lies between the shortwave broadcast and 10-meter Amateur radio bands and was established by law in 1949. The Class D two-way communications service was opened in 1959. FCC regulations permit only "transmissions" (one party to another) rather than "broadcasts" (to a wide audience); advertising is not allowed on CB Channels because it is considered "broadcasting." Citizens Band (CB) Radio operators are not required to obtain an FCC license to operate their CB equipment or provide station identification. Nevertheless, an operator of a CB radio station is still required to comply with the communications act and with the rules of CB Radio Operation.
